The Scapegoat That Grew Wings
A fictional art book by Patrick Chuka
This book took me five years to create, not because I wanted to make just another story, but because it felt like something I was meant to finish. The Scapegoat That Grew Wings is a deeply personal auto-fictional journey told through a character named Ochuko, shaped by real experiences, transformed through art, reflection, and imagination.
At 17, Ochuko is forced out of his home in Lagos, Nigeria and arrives in the United States completely alone, with no family, no safety net, and no clear future. What follows is a raw story of survival, identity, and healing. He moves through loss, isolation, exploitation, and mental collapse, but also through creativity, self-forgiveness, spiritual awakening, and ultimately, transformation.
This is a 140-page book with 14 chapters, tracing his journey from Lagos to San Francisco. Every chapter is paired with original artwork I created myself across multiple mediums, including ballpoint pen, pencil, paper, and 3D software, forming a visual language that carries the emotional weight of the story. Each piece is part of the narrative, not decoration.
Much of this story was born from diary entries written in real time while these moments were unfolding in my life. Fiction became the only way I could process, understand, and share what happened, and hopefully turn pain into something meaningful. This book is honest about suffering, but it is equally about healing and reclaiming hope.
I poured over 20,000 hours into this project, drawing, writing, rebuilding, and relearning who I am along the way. This work exists because I believe no child should experience the things I went through, and because survival means something when it can help others feel seen.
One of the featured drawings alone took over 1,000 hours to complete, representing Ochuko in his purest form, a heart full of generosity, innocence, and resilience. This book is an ode to lost innocence and the fight to reclaim life again.
This isn’t just a book. It’s a journey.
A conversation.
An offering to anyone who has ever felt lost and had to rebuild themselves from nothing.
If this story finds its way into your hands, thank you for being part of the healing, because none of us heal alone.
